Ingredients
Scale
Wet Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups applesauce
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
Dry Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Optional Ingredients
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
- 1/2 cup raisins
Instructions
- Preheat oven and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan to ensure the cake doesn’t stick.
- Mix wet ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the applesauce, sugar, vegetable oil, and eggs. Stir well until the mixture is fully blended.
- Combine dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt for even distribution of flavors.
- Combine wet and dry mixtures: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ones and mix gently until just combined, taking care not to overmix to keep the cake tender.
- Fold in optional ingredients: If using, fold in the chopped walnuts or pecans and raisins to add texture and bursts of sweetness.
- Pour batter into pan: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan, spreading it out smoothly.
- Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool the cake: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely for the best texture.
- Optional glaze: For added sweetness and shine, drizzle with a glaze made from powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract if desired.
Notes
- You can substitute walnuts with pecans or omit nuts if you prefer a nut-free cake.
- Make sure not to overmix the batter to keep the cake moist and tender.
- The optional glaze adds sweetness but can be skipped for a less sweet dessert.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
- Use unsweetened applesauce for better control over sweetness.
