Ingredients
Scale
Beef Rolls
- 1 lb (450g) thinly sliced beef (sirloin, flank steak, or rib-eye work well)
- 8 oz (225g) enoki mushrooms, trimmed
Sauce
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional for extra flavor)
- 2 teaspoons rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon ginger, finely grated (optional)
For Cooking and Garnish
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)
- Sesame seeds (for garnish, optional)
- Chopped green onions (for garnish, optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Beef and Mushrooms: Lay the thinly sliced beef flat on a clean surface. Take small bunches of enoki mushrooms (about 10-15 mushrooms per roll) and place them at one end of each beef slice.
- Roll the Beef: Roll the beef tightly around the enoki mushrooms, securing them with toothpicks if necessary. Repeat the process until all beef slices are rolled up.
- Make the Sauce: In a small bowl, combine the soy sauce, sesame oil, oyster sauce (if using), rice vinegar, sugar, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the sauce is well mixed.
- Cook the Beef Rolls: Heat a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat and add the vegetable oil. Place the beef rolls in the pan and sear on all sides by turning occasionally. Cook for about 5-6 minutes or until the beef is cooked through and nicely browned. If the beef browns too quickly, reduce to medium heat to prevent burning.
- Add the Sauce: Pour the prepared sauce over the cooked beef rolls in the skillet. Allow the sauce to simmer for 1-2 minutes, spooning it over the rolls as it thickens slightly.
- Serve: Carefully remove the beef rolls from the skillet, discard any toothpicks if used. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired. Serve hot with steamed rice or vegetables for a complete meal.
Notes
- Use thinly sliced beef like sirloin, flank steak, or rib-eye for easier rolling and tenderness.
- Enoki mushrooms can be substituted with other thin mushrooms, but enoki provide the signature look and texture.
- The oyster sauce is optional but adds a rich umami depth to the sauce.
- Make sure to trim the enoki mushroom roots and clean them well.
- To keep rolls secured while cooking, toothpicks are recommended but ensure they are removed before serving.
- Serve with steamed rice or stir-fried vegetables to complete the meal.
