Description

This indulgent Chocolate Peanut Butter Earthquake Cake combines rich chocolate fudge cake batter with creamy peanut butter frosting, chocolate chips, and peanut butter cups. The cake is assembled by layering spoonfuls of decadent peanut butter frosting atop the unbaked chocolate cake batter and then baked to create a moist, gooey dessert that’s perfect served warm with ice cream.

Ingredients

Scale

Chocolate Cake

  • 1 chocolate fudge cake mix (plus ingredients needed to prepare as per package instructions)

Peanut Butter Frosting

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups powdered sugar

Toppings

  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chocolate peanut butter cups, halved

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the cake later.
  2. Prepare Cake Mix: Follow the package instructions for the chocolate fudge cake mix to prepare the batter.
  3. Pour Cake Batter: Lightly grease a 9×13 inch cake pan and pour in the prepared chocolate cake batter. Do not bake at this stage. Set aside.
  4. Melt Butter: On the stovetop, melt 1/2 cup of butter until it becomes bubbly, then remove from heat.
  5. Make Peanut Butter Frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat the melted butter and softened cream cheese together until smooth. Add peanut butter and vanilla extract, continuing to beat until combined. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until the frosting is fully incorporated, light, and fluffy.
  6. Assemble Cake: Spoon dollops of the peanut butter frosting evenly over the unbaked chocolate cake batter in the pan. Sprinkle chocolate chips and halved chocolate peanut butter cups over the top.
  7. Bake: Bake the assembled cake in the preheated oven for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the center is just slightly jiggly but set around the edges.
  8. Cool: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 15 to 20 minutes before slicing into servings.
  9. Serve: For an extra indulgent treat, serve the cake warm accompanied by ice cream.

Notes

  • Do not bake the cake batter before adding the peanut butter frosting on top.
  • The cake is best served warm to enjoy the gooey texture.
  • If you prefer a sweeter frosting, add more powdered sugar gradually to taste.
  • Make sure the cream cheese is softened to avoid lumps in the frosting.
  • You can substitute peanut butter cups with other nut butter candies if desired.
