Ingredients
Scale
Cinnamon Roll Base
- 2 (12.4-oz) cans cinnamon rolls
- 1 (12-oz) container whipped cream cheese
- 1 cup chopped pecans
Cake Topping
- 1 (21-oz) box cinnamon swirl cake mix
- ¾ cup unsalted butter, thinly sliced
Frosting
- Frosting from the canned cinnamon rolls
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350ºF (175ºC). Spray a 9×13-inch cake pan with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Prepare cinnamon rolls: Open the canned cinnamon rolls and separate each roll. Set the frosting from the cans aside for later use.
- Cut and spread dough: Cut each cinnamon roll into 4 pieces and evenly spread these pieces in the bottom of the prepared pan.
- Add cream cheese dollops: Using a small cookie scoop, place dollops of whipped cream cheese on top of the cinnamon roll pieces in the pan.
- Add pecans: Sprinkle the chopped pecans evenly over the cream cheese layer.
- Apply cake mix and swirl topping: Sprinkle the cinnamon swirl cake mix evenly over the entire pan, then evenly sprinkle the cinnamon swirl mixture included in the cake mix box over the top.
- Top with butter: Place the thin slices of unsalted butter evenly all over the cake mix layer, making sure to cover as much of the surface as possible.
- Bake the cake: Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes until the top is golden brown and the cake is cooked through.
- Add frosting: Warm the reserved canned frosting in the microwave for a few seconds until drizzlable, then drizzle it generously over the warm cake before serving.
Notes
- For easier slicing, let the cinnamon rolls rest at room temperature for a few minutes before cutting.
- You can substitute pecans with walnuts or skip nuts if preferred.
- Make sure to use unsalted butter to control the salt level in the dessert.
- Allow the cake to cool slightly before adding frosting to avoid it melting completely.
- Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator, and reheat slightly before serving.
