Description

This hearty French Onion and Beef Dinner combines caramelized onions and savory ground beef with a rich French onion soup mix, topped with melted mozzarella and provolone cheeses. Served over comforting egg noodles or mashed potatoes, it’s a perfect easy weeknight meal with rich flavors and satisfying textures.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 packet (1 oz) dry French onion soup mix
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Cheese Topping

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded provolone cheese

Garnish

  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (optional)

To Serve

  • 4 servings cooked egg noodles or mashed potatoes

Instructions

  1. Sauté Onions: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are softened and golden brown, about 8 to 10 minutes.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: Push the caramelized onions to the side of the skillet. Add the ground beef and cook until browned and fully cooked, breaking up any clumps as it cooks. Once cooked, drain any excess grease from the skillet.
  3. Add Seasonings and Broth: Stir in the dry French onion soup mix, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix everything evenly and let it simmer on medium-low heat for 5 to 7 minutes until the mixture thickens slightly.
  4. Melt Cheese: Reduce the heat to low. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and provolone cheeses evenly over the beef mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid and allow the cheese to melt for about 2 to 3 minutes.
  5. Garnish and Serve: If desired, sprinkle chopped fresh parsley over the melted cheese. Serve the cheesy beef and onion mixture hot over cooked egg noodles or creamy mashed potatoes for a delicious meal.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, add a splash of red wine along with the beef broth when simmering.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version of this dish.
  • Add sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers to the onions for extra vegetables and added depth.
  • Use gluten-free French onion soup mix and broth to keep this dish gluten-free.
