Description

Honey Bun Brownies are a scrumptious twist on classic brownies, combining the ease of a yellow cake mix with a cinnamon-sugar swirl and a sweet glaze. These bars feature a rich, moist texture thanks to sour cream and are finished with a powdered sugar glaze that mimics the flavor of honey buns.

Ingredients

Scale

Brownie Batter

  • 1 box (15.25 oz) yellow cake mix
  • ¾ cup vegetable oil
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream

Cinnamon-Sugar Swirl

  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Batter. In a large bowl, combine the yellow cake mix, vegetable oil, eggs, and sour cream. Whisk until the batter is smooth and fully blended.
  3. Create Cinnamon-Sugar Mixture. In a separate small bowl, mix together the packed light brown sugar and ground cinnamon until evenly combined.
  4. Layer Batter and Cinnamon Sugar. Spread half of the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the brown sugar-cinnamon mixture evenly over this layer.
  5. Add Remaining Batter and Swirl. Spoon the remaining batter over the cinnamon sugar layer. Using a knife, gently swirl the top layer to create a marbled effect with the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  6. Bake. Place the pan in the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Prepare Glaze. While the brownies bake, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl until smooth to create the glaze.
  8. Cool and Glaze. Let the brownies cool slightly after baking. Then, drizzle the glaze evenly over the warm brownies.
  9. Set and Serve. Allow the glaze to set before slicing into squares and serving. Enjoy warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the cinnamon-sugar layer for extra crunch and texture.
  • You can substitute Greek yogurt for sour cream to lighten the texture.
  • These brownies are best served slightly warm to enjoy the gooey glaze and moist interior.
