Description

This Puff Pastry Breakfast Tart is a delicious and visually appealing breakfast or brunch dish featuring flaky puff pastry topped with eggs, melted cheese, crispy bacon, and fresh chives. It’s quick to prepare and bakes to golden perfection in just 33 minutes, making it an ideal savory tart to impress family or guests.

Ingredients

Scale

Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry

Eggs and Seasoning

  • 4 large eggs
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Toppings

  • 1 ½ cups freshly grated cheese (Colby-Jack recommended)
  • 2 to 4 slices cooked bacon, diced into ½ inch pieces
  • Fresh chives, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Place the oven rack in the middle position and preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Prepare Puff Pastry: Thaw the puff pastry sheet according to the package instructions. Once thawed, roll it out into a 10 by 10-inch square. Carefully transfer the pastry onto the prepared baking sheet.
  3. Create Pastry Border: Fold one edge of the puff pastry over ½ inch, then fold it again another ½ inch to form a tight border. Repeat this folding on all four edges to create a raised crust to hold the toppings.
  4. Add Eggs and Seal Edges: Crack the eggs over the center of the puff pastry within the bordered area, spreading them evenly. Use a pastry brush dipped into some of the egg whites from the cracked eggs to brush along the folded edges, ensuring all corners are firmly pinned down to prevent leaking.
  5. Season and Add Toppings: Season the eggs generously with salt and pepper. Evenly sprinkle the grated Colby-Jack cheese over the eggs, then distribute the diced cooked bacon on top.
  6. Bake the Tart: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 18 minutes, or until the puff pastry edges are golden brown, puffed, and the eggs are set.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Remove the tart from the oven carefully. Sprinkle the chopped fresh chives over the top for a burst of fresh flavor. Cut into squares and serve warm. Enjoy your breakfast tart!

Notes

  • Thaw puff pastry completely before rolling to avoid cracking.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding herbs like thyme or rosemary with the cheese.
  • Substitute bacon with sausage or a vegetarian option as desired.
  • Use any type of cheese that melts well if Colby-Jack is unavailable.
  • Ensure to use fresh eggs for safety and best taste.
  • Serve immediately for best texture as puff pastry will soften over time.
