Description
Saltine Toffee, also known as Christmas Crack, is a deliciously addictive dessert featuring a crispy saltine cracker base topped with buttery toffee and melted chocolate. This easy-to-make treat combines sweet, salty, and crunchy elements for a perfect holiday or anytime snack.
Ingredients
Scale
Base
- 1 sleeve (about 40) saltine crackers
Toffee Topping
- 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks)
- 1 cup packed light brown sugar
Chocolate & Garnish
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- Sea salt flakes (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper to catch any drips and make cleanup easier. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer covering the entire surface of the baking sheet without overlapping.
- Make Toffee Sauce: In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter and light brown sugar together over medium heat, stirring constantly to combine well. Once the mixture reaches a boil, allow it to bubble vigorously for 3 minutes without stirring to properly caramelize the sugar and achieve the perfect toffee consistency.
- Apply Toffee to Crackers: Carefully pour the hot toffee evenly over the saltine crackers on the baking sheet. Use a spatula to spread the toffee and ensure each cracker is completely coated to create the toffee layer.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbling and fully set around the crackers.
- Add Chocolate: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and immediately sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let them sit for 2 to 3 minutes to melt, then use a spatula to spread the melted chocolate into a smooth and even layer.
- Garnish and Chill: Sprinkle chopped pecans, walnuts, or sea salt flakes over the melted chocolate if desired for added texture and flavor. Allow the toffee to cool completely at room temperature before transferring it to the refrigerator. Chill for at least 1 hour to allow the toffee to fully set and harden.
- Serve and Store: Once hardened, break the toffee into bite-sized pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerated for longer freshness.
Notes
- You can substitute dark or white chocolate chips instead of semi-sweet for a different flavor profile.
- Adding crushed candy canes or sprinkles makes a festive holiday version.
- Omit nuts to make this recipe nut-free and safe for those with nut allergies.
- Use fresh butter and good quality chocolate for the best results.
- Ensure the toffee bubbles for the specified time to avoid a sticky, undercooked texture.
