Description

Speedy Dumpling Stuffed Flatbreads are a delightful and quick-to-make fusion of crispy flatbreads filled with a savory dumpling mixture of ground pork, chicken, or tofu combined with cabbage and aromatic spices. These pan-fried stuffed breads are perfect for a satisfying appetizer or light meal, served with a tangy, sweet, and spicy dipping sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1/2 lb ground pork or chicken (or tofu for a vegetarian version)
  • 1/2 cup cabbage, finely chopped
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp rice vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp ground pepper
  • Salt to taste

Dough

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup warm water

For Cooking

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (for cooking)

Dipping Sauce

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp honey (or sugar)
  • 1/4 tsp chili flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dumpling filling: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground pork, chicken, or tofu with finely chopped cabbage, chopped green onions, grated ginger, minced garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, ground pepper, and salt. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well incorporated.
  2. Make the flatbread dough: In a separate bowl, mix together the all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder. Gradually add the warm water while stirring to form a cohesive dough.
  3. Knead the dough: On a floured surface, knead the dough for about 5 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, sprinkle a little more flour to achieve the right consistency.
  4. Divide and shape the dough: Split the dough into 6 to 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten each into a 4-5 inch round disc.
  5. Fill the flatbreads: Place about one tablespoon of the prepared filling in the center of each dough disc. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape, then pinch and seal the edges tightly to encase the filling.
  6. Heat the skillet: Warm 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  7. Cook the stuffed flatbreads: Place the stuffed flatbreads in the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until the flatbreads are golden brown and crispy. Add more vegetable oil if needed to prevent sticking.
  8. Rest the cooked flatbreads: Remove the cooked stuffed flatbreads from the skillet and allow them to cool slightly on a plate.
  9. Prepare the dipping sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, sesame oil, honey, and chili flakes (if using). Taste and adjust seasoning as desired.
  10. Serve: Serve the Speedy Dumpling Stuffed Flatbreads warm alongside the dipping sauce. Enjoy!

Notes

  • You can substitute ground pork or chicken with tofu to make this recipe vegetarian.
  • If you prefer a spicier dipping sauce, add more chili flakes or a dash of hot sauce.
  • For a gluten-free alternative, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend, but the texture may vary.
  • Make sure to pinch the edges firmly to prevent the filling from leaking during cooking.
  • Leftover flatbreads can be reheated in a skillet to restore crispiness before serving again.
