Ingredients
Scale
Beef and Marinade
- 1 lb (450g) flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
Sauce
- 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1/4 cup water
Aromatics and Garnish
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 inch piece of ginger, grated
- 2 green onions, sliced
- 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and water until fully combined. Set aside.
- Heat the Oil: Warm the vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat, ensuring the pan is hot before cooking.
- Cook the Beef: Add the thinly sliced flank steak to the hot pan and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until the beef is browned and just cooked through. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside to rest.
- Sauté Aromatics: In the same pan, add minced garlic and grated ginger. Cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant but not burnt, releasing their flavors.
- Simmer the Sauce: Pour the prepared sauce mixture into the pan. Bring it to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally until the sauce thickens slightly and becomes glossy.
- Combine Beef and Sauce: Return the cooked beef to the pan, tossing it thoroughly in the sticky hoisin sauce. Heat for an additional minute to combine flavors evenly.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove the pan from heat and sprinkle sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds over the beef if using. Serve immediately with steamed rice or noodles.
Notes
- For a spicy kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or a dash of chili sauce to the sauce mixture.
- You can swap flank steak with sirloin or skirt steak for variation.
- To ensure maximum tenderness, slice the beef very thinly against the grain before cooking.
